What Are Porcelain Dental Veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers closely mimic the appearance of natural teeth, and are virtually indistinguishable when applied. They provide strength to the natural tooth enamel. The application of veneers will make slight position alterations, or change the tooth shape, size, and/or color. Porcelain dental veneers function in the same way as natural teeth, and if properly cleaned and cared for, can last for years.
Porcelain laminate veneers consist of a compilation of several thin ceramic layers which replace original tooth enamel, and an adhesive layer. To apply a veneer, a very small amount of the original tooth enamel must be removed. This is essential as it creates room for the porcelain veneer to fit within the mouth and most accurately restore natural tooth function while creating an even better appearance than the original tooth.
The bond between original tooth and porcelain veneer is critical as it not only provides the esthetic perfection desired, but also a strong bond which is essential for correct veneer function. Light-sensitive resin is placed between the original tooth and the veneer and then hardened using a special curing light.
What Are the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers can conceal a variety of aesthetic imperfections. The placement process is shorter than the process associated with other dentistry options. In most cases, placing porcelain veneers only requires two office visits, in our Staten Island, New York office. Patients who want to straighten or even out their teeth don’t have to spend years wearing braces.
With porcelain veneers, the results are instantaneous. When applied correctly, porcelain veneers look beautiful and natural. Veneers are crafted from translucent, ceramic materials that reflect light the same way as natural teeth. Veneers can also be combined with other treatments and procedures – such as cosmetic gum re-contouring or teeth whitening – for a full smile makeover.
